Episode 16: The Basement, New York

Today on The Basement, Vic and Scott leave the smelly confines of the basement—fly free, little birds!—and travel 3,000 miles to New York City where they interview Insomniac’s Brian Allgeier. Three things you need to know about Brian: 1. he worked on seven Ratchet & Clank games; 2. he’s working on a new game called Fuse; and 3. he sports a well-groomed, lustrous beard on his face.
Behind-The-Scenes Pro-Tip: The interview took place in a subterranean nightclub in midtown Manhattan, which was eerily basement-like. Let the mind-blowing begin in 3…2…1…

Episode 15: Dishonored Delights

Today down in Le Basement (which is French for “The Basement”): Vic and Scott argue over the need for cases for electronic devices. Scott says no; but Vic says yes. After that, they both rave about Arkane Studio’s new game, Dishonored. This incredible experience is, well, incredible, with one extremely minor exception: Scott does not like reading the game’s virtual books. So he complains about it for awhile, then Vic makes fun of him. Hey, it’s just another typical day down here in The Basement.

Episode 14: Deconstructing Looper

Vic and Scott are still talking about Looper, so they decided to share their most intimate thoughts with you, dear listener, in a spoiler-packed bonus episode of Vic’s Basement. Yes, we said “spoiler-packed.” Because we reveal everything in this episode. So, if you haven’t seen Looper, and you’re planning to, wait until after you’ve seen the movie before listening to the show. Get it? AFTER THE MOVIE. OK. As long as we’re clear on that. Enjoy.

Episode 13: Half Empty/Half-Full Episode

Today on Vic’s Basement: Vic talks about all the things he loves; Scott rants about all the things he hates. In other words, IT’S PRETTY MUCH BUSINESS AS USUAL DOWN IN THE BASEMENT. A couple of love/hate topics: annual “iterations” of sports videogames, and the iPhone 5. Vic sees all of this as progress; Scott sees the disposable nature of it all as the exact opposite of progress. Also: Vic and Scott discuss the controversial final play in Monday night’s NFL game, then quickly realize that they’re out of their depth, and go back to discussing the nerd things they actually know something about. Also: Scott reaches into Ye Olde Listener Mailbag, and finds an email from a listener who wants to know what classic fighting game featured the words “BURNING RUBBER.” Answer: You’ll have to tune in to find out.

Episode 12: Indiana, iPhone, and the Wii U Reveal

Vic and Scott head underground to Vic’s game-cave/man-room/fart-thedral to fart, game, and scream obscenities at one another. This week they talk about/scream about the new Indiana Jones Blu-ray collection, the iPhone 5, and the big Wii U reveal. Bonus Topic of the Day: Scott and Vic discuss their need to curse like sailors on shore leave while gaming. Why do gamers curse so much? What primal need does it satisfy? Beyond that, are there bugs in the middle of the ocean? Tune into this week’s episode of Vic’s Basement for all the answers to all of your existential questions.

Episode 11: The Mark of the Ninja Episode

Vic and Scott celebrate their unabashed love of the new XBLA game Mark of the Ninja by inviting the game’s lead designer, Nels Anderson, down to their underground bunker. Nels shares some candid, behind-the-scenes stories about the game’s development. Nels also reveals several things that didn’t make it into the final game. Also: the guys pester Nels about the fact that humans in the game can be eviscerated, but that the game’s guard dogs can only be knocked out in the gentlest, sweetest way imaginable. (Nels turns out to be a dog owner. Shocker there, eh?) As a bonus, Scott writes a terrible haiku. Start listening in three, two, one…

Episode 10: The Super Hero Fan Expo Panel

Calling all True Believers! Each year at Fan Expo Toronto Vic and Scott team up with that magnificent bastard Syd Bolton and hold a Buried Treasures-centric panel which takes a look at the history of gaming. This year, the boys decided to focus on superhero games. They shine a spotlight on some of their favorites, including The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and—brace yourself for the impact—Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy.

Bonus Challenge: Listen for the audience member who pitches Syd, Vic and Scott on how to make a winning Superman game. (It’s actually a pretty great pitch.)

Episode 9: Live From Fan Expo, It’s the ROTR and EP Daily Cast

Welcome to a special all-star BONUS EPISODE of Vic’s Basement. On today’s show, Vic and Scott actually leave the basement and travel to Toronto for Fan Expo 2012. There they meet up with the rest of the Reviews on the Run and the EP Daily cast, including Ben Silverman, Miri Jedeikin, Jose Sanchez, Shaun Hatton, Marissa Roberto, Raju Mudhar, Steve Tilley, Briana McIvor, and the incomparable Ben “Dr. Spectacular” Bolea. The entire cast answers questions from a live Fan Expo audience, including a series of questions that, bizarrely enough, require only one-word answers. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll want to stop what you’re doing and immediately write heart-felt fan mail to Dr. Spectacular. Start listening in 3…2…1…

Episode 8: The Sleeping With The Sleeping Dogs Show SleepingDogs

Welcome to a special “Sleeping Dogs” edition of Vic’s Basement. This week: Sleeping Dogs producer Dan Sochan joins Vic and Scott down in their subterranean lair, where they bark orders at Vic’s mom to BRING DOWN MORE DAMN MEATLOAF. Dan gives a candid, behind-the-scenes look at the making of Sleeping Dogs, including a true story called, “That One Time We Were Alone In A Dingy Room With Actual Triad Members And Feared For Our Lives.” Trust us: it is hair-raising. If you’re playing Sleeping Dogs and loving it, you’re not going to want to miss this episode. Hell, you know what? Even if you’re not playing Sleeping Dogs, you’re still going to love this week’s episode. If you don’t, we will personally buy you a meatloaf dinner. Promise.

Episode 7: The One Where Scott Hates Action Figures

This week down in The Basement: Scott and Vic weigh in with What We’re Playing (Scott = Deadlight; Vic = Sound Shapes). Also: the basementeers discuss the new movie Hit & Run in what turns into an impromptu (and not at all creepy) meeting of the Kristen Bell Fan Club. Finally, Vic badgers Scott into discussing action figures, something which Scott really f***ing hates. And all of this is brought to you with 89-percent fewer swears.
