It looks like Google wasn’t the only one interested in Twitch.
Amazon has officially announced that it’s buying the game streaming service. Reports surfaced earlier this year that Google was also interested in acquiring Twitch, but obviously those talks didn’t work out. Twitch CEO Emmett Shear says that the deal with Amazon will give them the support they need to expand and grow the platform, and adds that the company shares their values and long-term vision.
Amazon has been beefing up its presence in the online streaming world in a bid to take on rivals like Google, Netflix, and Hulu. Twitch seems like the perfect way to do it, because the site is the fourth-largest source of online traffic in the United States.
