Spider-Man Female Spin-Off On the Way

Marvel Black Cat

It looks like Sony Pictures is changing its plans for the future of the Spider-Man film franchise yet again.

Deadline reports that the studio is developing a new spin-off film set in the Spider-Man universe that will focus on one of the female character. We don’t know which one, but likely candidates include Black Cat, Silver Sable, Stunner, Firestar, and Spider-Woman. Whoever it is, expect to see her in theatres in 2017.

It’s worth pointing out that this new Spider-Man spin-off will be the first big tentpole superhero movie with a female lead. There have been plenty of smaller comic book adaptations focusing on heroes like Elektra, but all the big ones have had male leads with female supporting heroes. Marvel Studios is currently working on an Agent Carter TV series, and DC is expected to eventually make a Wonder Woman solo film starring Gal Gadot.

This comes just a few weeks after Sony announced the delay of The Amazing Spider-Man 3 following the less-than-expected box office performance of the most recent film, The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It was set to arrive in 2016, but will now land in 2018.

Here is the current slate of upcoming movies in the Spider-Man franchise:

The Sinister Six: November 11, 2016
Unconfirmed Female Hero Film: 2017
Venom/Carnage Solo Movie: 2017 or 2018
The Amazing Spider-Man 3: 2018
