Here’s the first American trailer for Snowpiercer, the South Korean film that stars big western actors like Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, John Hurt, and Ed Harris.
Snowpiercer tells a dystopian tale that takes place twenty years in the future, when a new ice age has rendered most of the Earth uninhabitable. The characters have managed to survive aboard an advanced train built to withstand freezing conditions, with the rich living at the front and the poor at the back. That means important social themes like income inequality and class warfare will be explored, kind of like Elysium, but on a train.
The film was helmed by South Korea’s Bong Joon-ho, who also directed the 2006 monster movie The Host, and it debuted in Asia last summer to rave reviews. There are reports that American distributor Harvey Weinstein was trying to force him to cut half and hour out the film in order to make it more appealing to American audiences. Bong Joon-ho apparently won that battle, because the runtime of the American version is the same as the original release.
North Americans will be able to board Snowpiercer when it goes into limited release on June 27.
