Deadline reports that Looper director Rian Johnson is in talks to write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII and Episode IX, two follow ups to J.J. Abrams’ Episode VII. If the news is true, it means that J.J. will only be directing one adventure in the galaxy far, far away. The news has yet to be confirmed by Disney, but Deadline claims the plan is to start working on the new films quickly in order to give them as much time as possible in production and post-production.
Episode VIII is slated to arrive in 2017, with Episode IX in 2019. The Star Wars spin-off movies will be released in the off years, with the first one directed by Godzilla’s Gareth Edwards landing in 2016, and the second from Chronicle’s Josh Trank set to follow in 2018.
Star Wars: Episode VII will hit theatres everywhere on December 18, 2015, just in case you forgot.
