Break out the Jaeger bombs, because sci-fi geeks have a big reason to celebrate.
After a year of back and forth rumours, Pacific Rim 2 is officially happening. The announcement was made by Legendary Pictures and director Guillermo del Toro, who will be back along with the first film’s screenwriter Travis Beacham. They’ll be joined in developing the script by Zak Penn, who worked on The Avengers and the TV series Alphas. As for the story, expect more giant robots fighting giant monsters in the streets of major cities, and since this is a sequel, everything will be bigger and better. Pacific Rim 2 has already been given a release date of April 7, 2017.
Although the first Pacific Rim didn’t do as well as expected in North America, it was a massive hit internationally, notably in the growing Chinese market. It was produced by Legendary Pictures and distributed by Warner Bros, but the sequel will be distributed by Universal Pictures as part of a new deal between them and Legendary.
This isn’t the only new Pacific Rim action on the way. Guillermo del Toro has also revealed that an animated series based on the film is in the works, along with new issues of the comic book series Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero. Expect to see those before the new film arrives.
