Electric Playground was founded and launched by Victor Lucas in 1995. The show ran on television for over 25 seasons, becoming the world's longest running program focusing on gaming and geek-related news, reviews and commentary. It went through several transformations over the course of its television career - most notably splitting into two daily half-hour shows in 2010 - and reached millions of viewers.
The flagship show - EP Daily - focuses on delivering daily news and previews spanning "geek culture," covering topics such as toys, games, comics, and gadgets while also delivering on-location footage of events, red carpets, behind-the-scenes interviews, and more.
Its spin-off - Reviews on the Run - delivers consumer-focused reviews of the same type of content, earning a reputation for its raw honesty. Both shows continue to be produced and distributed online, predominantly via short segments delivered on YouTube.
Not many websites exist in 1995, let alone ones dedicated to covering video games. In this nascent digital era The Electric Playground’s one of few providing a steady stream of gaming news, reviews and commentary via elecplay.com
The Electric Playground TV show premieres in September of 1997, beginning its long run on television. The show – hosted by Tommy Tallarico and featuring Victor Lucas and Kelly Benson – airs weekly half-hour broadcasts across Canada and along the west coast of the United States.
EP’s popular segment called Reviews on the Run is spun off into its own show. It begins airing on the G4 Network as Judgment Day while remaining Reviews on the Run in Canada.
EP expands its television partnership with Rogers Media and transforms The Electric Playground into a daily program. The show is rebranded to EP Daily, adding new hosts and production personnel in various cities across North America.
New York based writer and critic Scott Jones joins Victor Lucas as permanent co-host on Reviews on the Run, filling the spot vacated by Tommy Tallarico. The show continues to film reviews around the city, while adding a touch of class with a suit-and-tie approach in studio.
Following the footsteps of its sibling program, EP Daily, Reviews on the Run also becomes a daily show. With reviewers based in Toronto, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Vancouver, the show covers reviews for everything from gadgets and toys, to movies, tv shows and – of course – video games.
Vic’s Basement, a weekly podcast, is added to the busy production schedule as EP Daily and Reviews on the Run episodes run into the hundreds. At peek production, the studio creates two daily shows, podcasts, documentaries, interstitial short form content, radio programming and more – reaching millions of viewers.
Operations covering all shows, media and production properties is consolidated under a single umbrella company called EPN (Electric Playground Network). Meanwhile, EPN’s core hosting team is expanded to three, with Marissa Roberto joining Victor Lucas and Scott Jones in its Vancouver-based studio.
As its lengthy TV deal with Rogers Media comes to a close, EP continues to produce a large amount of content principally via it’s YouTube channel as well as other audio and video streaming portals. After 25 seasons of television a new era for The Electric Playground begins!
